I can’t believe it’s taken this long to get some techy kit in the garden but we have finally done it. This weekend we installed an automatic greenhouse vent opener that Kate bought me for christmas.
For those of you who are not as sad and obsessed with gadgets as I am, this is a little widget that opens the greenhouse window dependent on temperature and then closes it again. Now I know this doesn’t sound like much, but given how completely unpredictable the Scottish summer is, it’s a life saver for my salad. The amount of times it’s been cold when I left for work and I came home to a baking, hot greenhouse and wilted plants or it’s been hot when I left so I opened the window and came home to snow and cold little plants!
Now, the greenhouse window will automatically be opened and closed as temperature dictates. I’m quite chuffed.
I’m not 100% certain of how it works, but in very basic terms, there is a black rod which does some sort of piston thing when it changes temperature. So it gets hot and it pushed the window level to open it and when it gets cold it pulls it back closed. Obviously its way more technical than that but hey there’s the basics.
No more worrying about it being too hot or too cold in the greenhouse while I’m at work.
Next… you never know – how a bout a wireless webcam live feed of the bird table? 🙂
