Not only can you save money by making your own potting mix (or potting soil). When you make your own, you have complete control over what is in there and even better you can adjust your recipe as needed for different situations. Today we'll go through the basic info you need to give you the understanding to make your own mixes and I'll share my basic recipe to get you started.

Don't sow your seeds yet | seed viability test and potting soil prep
Welcome to #seedanuary the month where we all get excited about buying and sowing our seeds. However, I'm going to ask you to stop for a second so we can talk about and test your seed viability. Will your seeds germinate?
Today we're going to do a seed viability test (which is dead easy) to determine if our seeds are worth sowing, this means we know before we get going and can't prevent disappointment and wasted soil and time. Talking about soil, we're also going to prepare our soil to get the best results. We want to make sure it is as fine as possible to help our little seedlings and we're going to sterilise it to make sure we kill off any nasties like fungus or fungus gnats and aphids.

Spider plant propagation | Propagation station episode 2
We talked about taking cuttings at nodes in our propagation episode 1 video, but what if there is no obvious stem to find the nodes on? Spider plants (or airplane plants) are a perfect example of this, so we are propagating from these to show how it can be done.

December garden chores | my favourite garden tools and a panic in the greenhouse
This week I've been getting on top of some of the jobs I've been putting off, but thought it would be an interesting way to chat to you about the tools I use (my favourites if you like) while I work. So we're finally moving that salvia to its new home, dealing with last years tarragon in the greenhouse and basically, all my plans go awry as things just go wrong which eventually ends in a bit of a panic in the greenhouse over the hydrangea and mould!

Why you should revitalise your garden soil | raised beds and container gardening
In the garden getting my raised beds and containers in tip-top condition ready for a new growing year. I revitalise my raised bed and container soil to replace all those nutrients that have been used up in the previous growing season. Soil can get tired and used up, so if you want to keep getting those gorgeous flowers and amazing harvests, you need to give it some love.
Luckily I can grab some fresh compost from my hotbin composter and add that as organic matter and then a wee bit of fertiliser works wonders.
Grab a coffee and come enjoy a wee chat while I get my beds sorted for the coming year.
